The London-Thomson Reuters Foundation reports: On Thursday, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked the indicators based on their ability to withstand natural disasters and cyber attacks. Tokyo is rated as the safest city in the world.
How to evaluate as safest city?
Researchers said that this year’s evaluation of 60 cities focused more on “urban resilience”, which is the ability of cities to recover from disasters. In the past decade, “urban resilience” has become more and more important in urban safety planning because national leaders are worried that climate change (such as heat stress – overheating, flooding) will cause damage to cities.
This index measures safety in four dimensions: digitization, infrastructure, health, and individual safety.
Singapore ranked second only after the Japanese capital, while Osaka, another Japanese metropolis, ranked third – the same as the two Safe Cities Index before 2015 and 2017.
As in previous years, the Asia-Pacific region has the top ten, with six cities, including Australia’s Sydney ranked fifth, South Korea’s Seoul ranked eighth, and Australia’s Melbourne ranked tenth.
Two European cities and two North American cities entered the top ten, Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, ranked fourth, and Copenhagen, Denmark, ranked eighth. Toronto, Canada ranked sixth, and Washington, the capital of the United States, ranked seventh.
Irene Mia, global editorial director of the Economist Intelligence Unit, said, “London is the only European city in the top ten of this list.”
