What does it do?
Stainless steel is an alloy made from many different elements. These include carbon, chromium, nickel, silicon, manganese and nitrogen. The proportion of each of these elements determines the properties of the final stainless steel alloy.

How to do it?
While each type of stainless steel has unique steps in the manufacturing process, it is a general blueprint for how the alloy is made. There are many different stages in manufacturing.
Almost all stainless steel production begins by melting all the individual components together in a furnace. It can take 8 hours or more to convert the metal to a liquid state.
This is the point at which the manufacturer can create the exact composition of the desired element for its alloy. The exact composition depends on the desired density, conductivity, electrical resistance and other properties.
The molten steel mixture at this time is formed into a shape. Depending on the end use of the steel, these can be cubes, blanks, slabs, rods or other shapes.
Two types of rolling can occur during the manufacturing process: hot rolling or cold rolling. Hot rolling is carried out at a temperature higher than the solidification of the steel.
The exact temperature depends on the grade of stainless steel the manufacturer is looking for. Cold rolling is done when the producer needs a very precise size or a very attractive surface.
By heating and cooling the steel under highly controlled conditions, the manufacturer can soften the material, improve ductility and improve other properties of the alloy.
It also mitigates the metal stresses generated by previous processes. The steel forms scale during the annealing process and is therefore removed using a nitric acid-hydrofluoric acid bath or an electrical cleaning process.
It is important to remove carbon from the molten metal mixture because carbon steel is very susceptible to rust. Carbon is removed by injecting an oxygen-argon mixture. Additional elements can be added at this stage.
